PCOS Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Diet & Treatment

Learn about PCOS symptoms, irregular periods, acne, excess hair, insulin resistance, diagnosis and evidence-based management.

What Is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a common hormonal and metabolic condition affecting many women of reproductive age.

Symptoms vary considerably.

Common features

PCOS may be associated with:

  • Irregular periods
  • Ovulatory dysfunction
  • Acne
  • Increased facial/body hair
  • Difficulty with fertility
  • Weight or metabolic problems

Having one symptom does not automatically mean someone has PCOS.

How is PCOS diagnosed?

Diagnosis generally involves a combination of clinical history, examination and appropriate investigations.

Other causes of menstrual irregularity may need to be excluded.

Can PCOS be managed?

Yes.

Management depends on the person’s symptoms and goals.

It may involve:

  • Physical activity
  • Nutrition and weight management where appropriate
  • Treatment for menstrual irregularity
  • Management of metabolic risk
  • Fertility treatment when pregnancy is desired
  • Treatment for acne or excess hair

PCOS management should be individualized rather than based on a single “PCOS diet.”
